The Sonus Quintett was founded in 2021 as one of the first reed quintets in Germany, featuring clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone, oboe, and bassoon. The ensemble chose the name "Sonus," meaning "sound" in Latin, reflecting their mission to create a completely new, unique, and exceptionally homogenous chamber music sound.
In its early months, the Sonus Quintett achieved remarkable success: first prize at the Tiziano Rosetti International Music Competition, second prize at the Luigi Cerritelli International Music Competition, second prize at the Grand Prix Rising Stars, the Silver Award at the Amadeus International Music Awards, third prize at the Odin Competition, and a Special Mention at the Beethoven Competition in Vienna. In 2023, the quintet earned second prize at the Carl-Wendling Competition for Chamber Music and participated as a scholarship ensemble at the Jeunesse Musicales International Chamber Music Campus in Weikersheim.
Additionally, the ensemble is part of the Chamber Music Studio at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts, where they receive regular guidance from renowned professors such as Ulrich Hermann, Norbert Kaiser and Gregor Sigl.
In October 2024, the Sonus Quintett released its debut album, Light, featuring original works for reed quintet alongside their own arrangements, inspired by the theme of light.
